Baieido is a manufacturer with 350 years history of incense making.

Incenses are created including traditional ingredients such as among others Clove, Cassia (cinnamon), Spiked Ginger Lily, Star anise, Chinese Nardostachys roots or Patchouli and fragrant woods such as Sandalwood, Agarwood, Kyara, which are being blended in in different proportions to create a rich traditional fragrance that even used everyday is still pleasant.

Incense series such us Kaiunkoh or Kobunboku are popular even at temples and among connoisseurs.
Shukohkoku series also became popular like those two.

Baieido also creates high-grade incenses like Kyara Kohshiboku or Kyara Kokoh which high-quality is worth their prices.
When Tokusen Shukohkoku has been created, we heard from Baieido:“This will be a high quality incense without unpleasant scent that can be felt in Shukohkoku”.

Unpleasant scent in Shukohkoku? We didn`t think that it has an unpleasant scent. Are there any disagreeable notes that come from the fragrant woods which had been used to create Shukohkoku? Or maybe not? The previously mentioned comment from Baieido was applying to the very subtle differences in scents that can be felt by people who are practicing Incense Ceremony (Kodo) for many years.

This also shows how Baieido is particular about their products.
Now I would like to introduce you the characteristic features of Tokusen Shukohkoku.
There are three main characteristics of Tokusen Shukohkoku that are easy to understand.

First of all, traditional fragrance.
Shukohkoku emits a fragrance like the one which can be felt in old, traditional Main Halls of Buddhist temples.

Secondly, clear, high-quality feel.
While burning, you can feel a rich scent of Siamese Agarwood.

Finally, Tokusen Shukohkoku is finished with overall rich, thick fragrance. Bitterness can be felt.

This fragrance’s characteristics are similar to the features of Kaden Kobunboku incense.
It is a good idea to compare Kaden Kobunboku with Shukohkoku incense.

It may be also very interesting to compare this incense with those of other makers too.

For example, even if the other incenses are also Agarwood-based like for example Gyokushodo`s Yozei or Yomei, Nippon Kodo`s Kyara Kongo or Jinkoh Juzan, they have rather modern fragrances.
So has Kunjudo’s Karin Zuito (Golden Waves).
Created with the same traditional herbs incenses such as Kunmeido’s Tenpyo, Asuka or Heian, when compared, they show quite extensive differences in their notes and scents.
